Origin:

Black and tan coonhound is a large breed of dog that has been developed to hunt racoons. It derives from the USA where it is very popular and still used for hunting racoons. It is a calm and friendly breed that will function well in a family if provided with plenty of exercise.

Character and behaviour
The black and tan coonhound is first and foremost a hunting dog. Thus, it is important that it gets plenty of exercise every day. As long as the need for exercise is met this breed will function perfectly as a family dog. It is a calm and gentle breed that, however, best hit it off with older children. In case the dog is living with small children it must learn its position in the hierarchy. Otherwise, playing sessions can become too wild.

The black and tan coonhound is available in two different versions: show dog and hunting dog. The hunting dog requires more exercise than the show dog. With regard to temperament the variation is equally evident within both versions. Regardless of type, it is best to keep a black and tan coonhound on a leash when taking it for a walk. When it gets the scent of something interesting it will follow it blindly. And that can become problematic walking next to busy roads.

History of the breed
The black and tan coonhound derives from the USA and was developed at the end of the 18th century. It is the only coonhound recognised as a breed by the international canine organisation. Crossing Talbot hound, bloodhound, and foxhound were crossed in the development of black and tan coonhound. The purpose of the breed was hunt on especially racoons. But it was also used for hunt on larger animals in difficult terrain. It thrives in extreme weather conditions. Today, this breed is used for hunting, guarding, and agility.

Appearance, grooming and health
The most characteristic feature of the black and tan coonhound is the long broad ears. It is a large dog with a large well-proportioned head. The legs are long and muscular. The eyes are round and chestnut brown. The muzzle is broad and the nose is black. The tail is long and low set.

Black and tan coonhound is 23-27 inches and weighs 50-75 pounds.

The coat is shorthaired and dense. It is black with tan/light brown markings on the head and on the legs. Only requires minimal grooming. Brushing now and again is sufficiently. However, the long ears need regular care. The black and tan coonhound may be inclined to suffer from hip dysplasia and it easily gains weight. Life expectancy is 10-12 years.
