The Bullmastiff is a large robust dog well suited as a guard dog. It requires friendly but firm training and daily exercise. When exercised it is important not to let the dog lead the way as it will then take control. Due to its flattened nose the Bullmastiff snores and, in addition, it drools.

Character and behaviour
The Bullmastiff has a calm temperament and it is eager to learn. However, it attacks uninvited guests if provoked. At the same time the Bullmastiff is an excellent family dog, which is really good with children. The owner needs to demonstrate leadership and be consequent when training the dog. Never let the Bullmastiff walk through doorways first as it will believe that it is the flock leader.

The Bullmastiff is more dominating than the mastiff, which makes it important to spend a lot of time training and socialising the dog while it is still a puppy. People not demonstrating authority will experience problems training the Bullmastiff.

History of the breed
The Bullmastiff originates from England and is a cross between a mastiff and an English bulldog. It is an old breed, which can be dated back to the 19th century, where they especially were used for protection against bandits and poachers in the woods. Back then the breed was aggressive and threatening, but trained not to bite the intruder. Today, the bullmastiff is used for police work, military work, and as a guard dog.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Bullmastiff is a large and massive breed, which in particular is characterised by its flat nose and black mask. The head is also large and square with skin folds and the large, dark, v-shaped ears are set high. The eyes are dark brown and the nose is black and wide. The legs are long and muscular.

The Bullmastiff is 25-27 inches and weighs 110-130 pounds.

The Bullmastiff is a shorthaired breed available in four different colours. The coat is slightly rough and very easy to groom. A brush through now and then is adequate.

The Bullmastiff may be prone to suffer from bloat, hip dysplasia, eyelid problems, and cancer. They have a tendency to become overweight. Average life expectancy does not surpass 10 years.
