Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small, loving pet dog, which is eager to please its owner. It is a variation of the dwarf spaniel and it has a long silky coat. It is available in four different colours and it originates from England, where the royal family and the nobility used them as pet dogs. Cavalier King Charles is not a lazy dog, but will be happy to act as lapdog for a day. However, it loves to run around and play and to learn new tricks.

Character and behaviour
Cavalier King Charles is a versatile dog, which is suitable for people in all ages. It is incredible playful and loving quickly adapting to new environments. Cavalier King Charles is instinct driven and chases things that move also near trafficked roads. It is rarely afraid of strangers, which means it is not suitable as a guard dog. It is the perfect family dog, which often bonds with children, other dogs or pets.

History of the breed
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is of English descend. Through hundreds of years the breed was highly popular with the royal family and noble family, but over time it became more popular with smaller dogs. Because of that Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was crossed with smaller dog breeds, most likely pugs, and the King Charles Spaniel was born.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was on the brink of extinction when an American dog lover offered a reward to the breeders who could present the old Cavalier King Charles breed, Slowly, the breed was brought back and in 1928 it had its first standard description.

Appearance, grooming and health
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a gentle expression with its large, round, dark eyes. The nose is slightly flat. The ears are long, hanging down. It has short straight legs and a straight back. The longhaired tail is well set.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is 12-13 inches and weighs 10-18 pounds.

The coat is long and silky and may either be smooth or slightly wavy. It is recommended to brush daily in order to avoid tangles. The four acknowledged colours, which the breed is available in, are: black-and-tan, ruby, Blenheim and tricolour.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel may suffer from genetic health issues such as: heart condition, ear infection, hip dysplasia and dislocating kneecaps.

What you should know about the breed:

  • A devoted and friendly pet dog.
  • Not aggressive and is good with children.
  • Good at hunting birds.
  • Suitable for obedience training and agility.
  • Can easily live in an apartment.
  • No problems playing with other dogs in all sizes.
