Chihuahua (or chihuahueno in Spanish) is the world’s smallest breed named after a Mexican federal state. The Chihuahua has a compact build and large ears, ball-shaped eyes, and a medium long tail.

Both a shorthaired and longhaired variant is available. The Chihuahua is a typical pet dog and often seen in the arms of female celebrities in Hollywood.

The Chihuahua is an intelligent and easily trained pet dog that has a great character.

History of the breed
The history of the Chihuahua is diffuse and mainly based on speculation. However, there is a general consensus that the breed is Mexican and dates further back than any other Latin-American breed.

The best known theory about the origin of the Chihuahua says that it stems from the pet dog Techichi. Techichi was very popular among the Toltec people. According to the theory; the Chihuahua was developed by crossing the Techihi with small Chinese dogs that the Spanish conquerors brought with them to Latin America.

It is said that Techichi became a popular status symbol after the Aztecs conquered the Toltec people. These dogs’ remains have been found in the big Cholula Pyramid. The modern Chihuahua is much smaller than the earliest dog find. Later on the Chihuahua became really popular in the Mexican federal state Chihuahua and was named hereafter.

Appearance, grooming and health
The apple shaped head of the Chihuahua is one of the dog’s characteristic features. The muzzle is medium long and slightly pointed. It has a scissors bite and large ball-shaped dark eyes. The ears are big, erect, and bat like.

The neck is slender and slightly curved. The back is flexible and slightly longer than the dog is tall. The tail is long and carried up over the back or upright. The Chihuahua weighs 2-6 pounds and is 6-9 inches tall.

The coat is either short or long. The short version is shiny, dense, and flat. The long version is smooth or slightly wavy making a ruff around the neck and flags on the legs, ears, and tail. All colours in the coat are accepted – also speckles and stripes.

Famous Chihuahuas
The Chihuahua is familiar with the red carpet. Among some of the most famous Chihuahuas are “Tinkerbell” and “Bambi” owned by hotel heiress Paris Hilton. In fact, she started the Chihuahua trend and soon after more celebrities purchased these dogs. The Chihuahua is also known as the mascot for “Taco Bell” and from the movie Legally Blonde in which Elle Woods (played by Reese Witherspoon) owns a Chihuahua called ‘Bruiser’.

The World’s smallest dog
“Boo Boo” is a 4 inch tall longhaired female Chihuahua that was elected the smallest dog by Guinness Book of World Records in 2007.
