Origin:

The Dobermann is a large dog, which originates from Germany. Even though it was bred to be a guard dog it can without any problems function as a family dog if consequent training is provided. It is a loving and happy dog with a very high intelligence. Dobermanns are often used as police dogs or rescue dogs.

Character and behaviour
The Dobermann is due to its protective nature the ideal guard dog, but at the same time it is a friendly and cheerful dog. Its high level of intelligence makes it suitable for being a work dog and it possesses a great deal of cooperativeness. They are easy to train, but requires proper and firm treatment. Dobermanns are strong-willed and brave and they rarely project aggressive behaviour towards their owners.

History of the breed
In the 19th century, the Dobermann dog was bred by a German tax collector named Louis Dobermann. He needed a watchful and protective dog, which at the same time had to be fearless and brave. As a result he bred the Dobermann. Exactly which breeds he used are not documented. The sharp and aggressive temperament that the Dobermann then possessed has been completely removed from today’s breed. And it is a nice and calm family dog.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Dobermann is a large, muscular and well-proportioned dog. The head is narrow and wedge shaped with a black nose – depending on the colour of the coat. The ears are small, highly set, and hanging down. The legs are sturdy and straight with short domed paws.

The Dobermann is 25-27 inches and weighs 35-45kg.

The coat is shiny, smooth, and black with characteristic light brown markings on chest, legs and head. It has no undercoat and thus requires minimal grooming. In cold and wintery weather it is recommended to cover the Dobermann with a sweater.

The Dobermann suffers from an array of health issues, among them hip dysplasia. Average life span is 9,5 years.
