German klein spitz is a small pet dog that derives from Germany. It is the second smallest German spitz type: Keeshond, Grossspitz, Mittelspitz, Kleinspitz, and Pomeranian. A Kleinspitz is really energetic and is always ready for play and fun times.

Character and behaviour
A Kleinspitz is an intelligent dog that loves to work and exercise. It is easily trained and well suited for agility training and obedience training. It gets attached to its family but can become reserved toward strangers.

A Kleinspitz will call attention to potential threats by barking. It is an excellent family dog given that it is robust and loves to play.

History of the breed
The Spitz type of dogs is some of the oldest dog breeds and was used as watchdog, shepherd dogs, and draught dogs. Kleinspitz derives from Germany and is the second smallest spitz type dog. The other spitz dogs are: Keeshond, Grossspitz, Mittelspitz, Kleinspitz, and Pomeranian.

Today, Kleinspitz primarily functions as a pet dog. However, it has been put in the shade by the smallest spitz, Pomeranian, which is more popular.

Appearance, grooming and health
Kleinspitz is a small and robust pet dog with a dense and fluffy coat. The coat can have many different colours e.g. black, white, brown, or grey.

The coat is double layered with a dense undercoat. It is shortest on the head, paws, and legs. Odd though it sounds, the coat needs brushing from tail to head in order to air the coat properly. A Kleinspitz mainly sheds two times a year.

A Kleinspitz typically weighs 33-39 pounds and it is 9-11 inches tall. The average life expectancy is 15 years.

What you should know about the breed:

  • Dense and fluffy coat, but does not require a lot of grooming.
  • Intelligent and lively. Loves to train.
  • Good at agility and obedience training.
  • Robust pet dog that is well suited as a family dog.
  • Suitable for apartment living.
  • Barks at potential threats and can be reserved toward strangers.
