The Lakeland terrier is a small and lively dog that loves to spend time with children. It resembles the Welsh terrier a lot but it is smaller and has a lighter coat. The Lakeland terrier needs trimming a couple of times a year. This breed derives from England where it was used for foxhunting.

Character and behaviour
The Lake terrier is a brave and confident breed that needs gentle but firm training. Besides, it loves digging holes in the garden. It is an active breed that requires a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. The Lakeland terrier is really good with children.

The Lakeland terrier is rarely aggressive or reserved. On the other hand it is an intelligent breed, which quickly learns new commands. However, it will only obey orders if it has not found something more exciting to do. The Lakeland terrier is also an excellent watchdog. It barks loudly when guests approach the door. Be aware that barking can get out of control and thus needs to be controlled.

History of the breed
The Lakeland terrier derives from the Lake District in England. It is actually one of the oldest terriers, which originally was called Patterdale. The Patterdale terrier was different from the Lakeland of today.

Originally, the Lakeland terrier was used for foxhunting. Contrary to the fox terrier, which chased the foxes out of the fox earths, the Lakeland terrier took up the battle against the fox. It was therefore an indispensable partner in the fight against foxes. Today, the Lakeland terrier is still used for hunting but also as a pet dog and as a show dog.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Lakeland terrier is a small dog with a quadrangular expression. It is a robust dog with a rectangular head. The nose is often black. The eyes are oval and dark. The legs are strong and straight. The tail is set high and almost rolled up. The ears are small, v-shaped, and folded forward.

The Lakeland terrier is max 14,5 inches tall and weighs approximately 15 pounds.

The coat has two layers. The outer coat is coarse, hard, and water resistant and the inner coat is soft and dense. Besides regular brushing the coat needs trimming 2-3 times a year. In return, it hardly sheds and thus may be suitable for allergy sufferers. It is generally speaking a healthy breed. Life expectancy is 10-12 years.
