The Miniature Schnauzer is a miniature version of the medium schnauzer and the Riesen Schnauzer. It is a small and loving dog, which has a square expression. It is suitable as a family dog, but has a firm temperament. It is one if the most popular dog breeds worldwide. Even though it is a smaller version of the other schnauzers it does not have any dwarf like features such as domed head or very short legs.

Character and behaviour
The miniature schnauzer is an energetic and utmost active family dog. Likewise, it is a happy and playful dog, which loves to spend time with its owners. It is important that the owner is calm, but firm towards the Miniature Schnauzer because otherwise it will dominate. The Miniature Schnauzer requires a great deal of exercise. However, it is both possible to have a Miniature Schnauzer in an apartment and in more rural surroundings, where it can run around. There is no problem for a Miniature Schnauzer to be around other dogs as long as they are socialised as puppies.

History of the breed
The Miniature Schnauzer originates from Germany, where it was bred in order to keep the rat population low in the 19th century. Despite of its square expression the Miniature Schnauzer is not related to terriers. Instead, it is most possibly a cross of poodles and Affenpinscher.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Miniature Schnauzer is a small but very sturdy dog. The body is almost square in shape with a rectangular head. The eyes are small and dark brown, and the nose is black.

The Miniature Schnauzer is 12-14 inches and weighs 12-18 pounds.

The coat is wirehaired and consists of two layers of which the outer coat needs trimming twice a year. Regular grooming is also necessary. The coat needs trimming in a way so that only the beard, eyebrows and leg hair remain long. The miniature Schnauzer is the only Schnauzer, which is available in four different colours.

The Miniature Schnauzer is a healthy breed, but is prone to suffer from liver disease, kidney stones, skin problems or cysts. It quickly gains weight thus it is important not to overfeed.

What you should know about the breed:

  • Requires long walks daily.
  • Hardly any shedding.
  • Important to socialise with other dogs and humans.
  • They invent their own games, if bored.
  • An utmost alert breed.
